ABOUT

(Find out more about the project below the Controls)

Poly Smash is a competitive game where you and a friend compete in a two-player, split screen experience where you both are trying to destroy the highest number of acrylamide structures, to fuel The A.R.C and bring colour back into this dull world. You need to reach the point score or have the highest score by the end of the round.

You and your companion discover that the planet that you colonised is dangerous and you need to return the acrylamide used to construct the colony back to The A.R.C ( The Acrylamide Recolonisation Cruiser) before the gas reacts with the acrylamide in the structures to form a toxic gas. To do this you will need to destroy the most structures to fuel the A.R.C to escape.

Poly Smash has gone through 3 different designs since creation, this is because our initial focus for the project was to create mechanics for the college assignment, then with version 2 we aimed to submit it to Young Bafta so we quickly came up with a game loop, final version we didn't have these constraints so we were more free but had to focus our efforts elsewhere so we agreed to pause development on the game.

Version 1

  • In the first version of the game we were focused on creating the mechanics and didn't explore how these mechanics would be used to create a gameplay loop.
  • The players were able to open a door and run around a simple level set on a mars like planet destroying black cubes filled with a colourful material.
  • Players had a slam ability that would destroy boxes around them in a small area.

Version 2

  • In Version 2 we decided we wanted to submit our game to the Young Bafta Developers award so we needed to get it into a playable state. In the first version we were focused on creating the mechanics and hadn't decided on how these mechanics would interact to create a gameplay loop.
  • The players would spawn in a starting room filled with destructable canisters to keep the player busy and interacting while waiting for the other player to be ready, once both are ready the door will open and they will compete to get the most score by breaking open dark rocks with vibrant material inside that dropped a canister that when collided with gives points.
  • There's a time limit to apply preasure on the players and to end the round if players take too long to reach the max score.

UI redesign concept:

- Less intrusive, providing better visibility and is visually pleasing.

Version 3

Design Document(Link)

  • In Version 3 we didn't have the short deadlines so since we had more freedom so we decided to redesign the game from the ground up. We introduced ranged weapons and the idea of having two modes Story and Arcade.
  • In Story mode you explore multiple locations on different planets, using your hammer to destroy objects blocking your path, and to solve puzzles. Using your guns to take down enemies you encounter along the way.
  • In Arcade mode you are defending the space station power cores, this would be split between four rooms that you and your teammate would need to be constantly navigating between to push back the waves of enemies using your weapons.

3D Main Menu Lobby Showcase:

- We wanted the players to walk through the diner door and take a seat at the bar when they joined, showing of their equiped gear/cosmetics. In here there is a jukebox for lobby music, a document for selecting missions, and a rubber duck for fun.

Jukebox Demonstation:

- New music could be easily added by importing the sound file and adding the song information to the data table/sheet.

- Pause/play, skip forwards/backwards, power on/off, randomize song.
